It’s no secret that this is Daft Punk’s world, and we’re all just living in it. Since the debut of this electronic duo, audiences everywhere have been dying to get a glimpse at the men behind the helmets. A much more difficult task than you would believe.
Formed in 1993 by the Parisians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bengalter (at the age of 18), Daft Punk have released four studio albums: Homework, Discovery, Human After All, and most recently Random Access Memories; where they famously collaborated with Pharrell Williams and celebrated composer Paul Williams. The duo also composed the score to the 2010 Disney film Tron: Legacy. They’ve received a whopping 40 different award nominations, and 13 wins; including 2 Billboard Music Awards for “Top Dance/Electronic Artist” and “Top Dance/Electronic Album;” and 4 Grammy Awards for “Best Electronica/Dance Album,” which they won twice, “Best Dance Recording,” “Best Pop Group/Duo Performance,” “Record of the Year,” and “Album of the Year.”
Famously, the group rarely grants interviews or makes public appearances without their trademark helmets – furthering the “legend” that they’re actually a couple of robots. The group has only toured twice in their entire career, once in 1997 and again in 2007. Considering that the trend seems to be a tour every 10 years, there’s been a lot of internet speculation about a possible tour in 2017. Knowing that their fans are desperate to see them live, the two seem to enjoy feeding into rumors about an appearance at the Coachella festival in California every year – then never playing, even though they make it known they’re backstage. Once leaving a well-placed helmet in view of the audience, that ends up not being used. They’ve even gone so far as to have teasers of their latest hits play over the loud speakers, causing people to flock to the stage, only to send someone else out to play. We can only say that their latest performance at the Grammy Awards this Sunday, with Canadian artist The Weekend, will surely be something people will be buzzing about.
