Basque Country also possesses a rich and tumultuous history. In fact, between Roman invasions in 196 and the Franco dictatorship that started in 1939, the history of the Basque people is “imprinted with pride, oppression and fierce struggles”. (National Geographic, 2019)
Furthermore, thanks to language policies and the passion of the abertzales (the patriots of the Basque nation) for the Basque language or “Euskara”, the language has experienced a revival for the last 30 years. It is considered the most ancient European language still spoken in its original birthplace.
